American Legion Announces Junior State Baseball Pairings

NEBRASKA CITY, Neb. – The Nebraska City and Auburn Junior Legion Baseball teams will compete for a Class B state title July 15-19 at Clemmy Holmes Field in Nebraska City.

American Legion Baseball officials released the tournament bracket Wednesday morning.

Host Nebraska City (27-2) will play Alliance in the first round at 8 p.m. Saturday. If they win, they would advance to the second round and play again Sunday at 8 p.m. If they lose, the Post 8 Juniors drop to an elimination game at 2 p.m. Sunday.

Auburn squares off against Bennington to open the tournament at 11 a.m. Saturday. A win would send them to the second round and they would play again at 5 p.m. Sunday. A loss drops them to the consolation bracket at 11 a.m. Sunday.

Nebraska City defeated Auburn, 7-0, in the Class B Area 1 Tournament Championship on Tuesday, as two pitchers combined to throw a shutout.

Garrett Bassinger drove in three runs when he homered with no outs in the first inning. Bassinger also earned the win on the mound. He threw four innings, gave up no runs, no hits, and struck out five.

Despite the loss, Auburn still qualifies for the state tournament, because Nebraska City is hosting. The host team automatically gets a spot in the tournament.

Syracuse Outpaces Louisville/Weeping Water in Final Elimination Game to Advance to State

SYRACUSE, Neb. – It took two games, but the Syracuse Junior American Legion Baseball team won the Class C Area 3 Tournament and punched their ticket to the Class C State Tournament in St. Paul, beginning on Saturday.

Louisville/Weeping water avoided elimination in the first game of the evening, but could not hold-up against the Post 100 Juniors in the final elimination game of the tournament.

Syracuse scored seven runs in an inning three times and outrunning their counterparts, 23-20. Louisville/Weeping Water scored 16 runs in the first four innings.

There was a total of 22 hits between the two teams and 19 total errors.

Syracuse will play Creighton in the first round of the Class C State Tournament Saturday at noon in St. Paul. If they win, they would play at 5 p.m. Sunday. If they lose, they drop to the consolation bracket and would play at noon Sunday. The state tournament runs through Wednesday.
