AUBURN – Baily Darnell will get to wear the Auburn “A” on the side of his helmet one more time this summer before exchanging his red and black, for blue and gold.

On Tuesday, the South Dakota State signee was selected to the South team in the 2019 Nebraska Shrine Bowl. The annual high school all-star football game will be played June 1 at Carol Cope Stadium on the University of Nebraska-Kearney campus.

Darnell hoped he would get an invite to the Shrine Bowl when he signed with the Jackrabbits on Dec. 16 at Auburn High School. He reports to Brookings, S.D. later in June.

“It’s pretty awesome,” Darnell said. “It means a lot and I appreciate them inviting me to play for a good cause. I just can’t wait to play some football again.”

The 6’1″, 180-pound senior finished his Bulldog career with 116 total tackles, 2 interceptions, a kick return touchdown and a punt return touchdown. He earned second-team all-state honors on defense from the World-Herald News Service.

He was also named to the Class C1 all-state team at running back in December. He rushed for 3,437 career yards, 864 receiving and 60 total touchdowns.

Darnell’s dad, Chris, played football for Falls City Sacred Heart and represented the Irish in the 1993 Shrine Bowl.

“My dad played in it also, which makes playing in the game even better,” Darnell said. “It’s just cool to think that he played in the same game I’m going to play in.”

Darnell’s future teammate at SDSU, Caden Johnson (Bishop Neumann), will also participate in the game for the North team.

York’s Glen Snodgrass will coach Darnell and the South team. The North team will be coached by Omaha Burke’s Paul Limongi.
