HASTINGS – Senior Katie Lilly knocked in three runs on a bases loaded double in the fifth inning, part of a four-run inning for No. 4 Bishop Neumann, and the Cavaliers defeated No. 5 Auburn, 6-1, Wednesday night in the first round of the Class C State Softball Tournament at the Bill Smith Softball Complex in Hastings.
Lilly finished 2-3.
Junior Maggie Vasa and freshman Mary Chvatal, hitting one and two in the order, each reached base four times. Vasa reached on a single, error, double and a walk, while scoring twice. Chvatal scored once on three singles and a walk.
Senior Taylor Stuhr drove-in two runs and scored once.
Senior Hadley Chvatal pitched a complete game. She gave up just four hits and one run, while striking out seven. The lone run she gave up was a solo home run from Auburn junior Maddie Reiman in the sixth.
Reiman went 2-2. It was her first career home run.
Sophomore Kylie Allen also went the full game in the circle. She struck out 11 in the loss.
Bishop Neumann, ranked No. 7 in the latest World-Herald News Service, improves to 24-8 and will play No. 1 Wayne at 3 p.m. Thursday. Wayne defeated No. 8 Cozad, 6-1, in the first round.
The Bulldogs (25-4) and Haymakers (18-16) play in an elimination game Thursday at 3 p.m. The game will air live on B103 (103.1 FM, B103.fm and ncnsportsnow.com).
