Hanover Girls Repeat As State Champs, Boys Finish Runner Up

HAYS, Kan. – The Hanover girls basketball team used a dominant second half to defend their Class 1A Division I state championship Saturday, beating St. Paul 48-28.

Both teams struggled offensively in the first half with St. Paul leading 17-15 at halftime. Hanover caught fire after the break though, outscoring St. Paul 22-2 in the third period.

Macy Doebele led the surge, finishing with 19 points and 12 rebounds while Claire Zarybnicky added 14 points. The win gives Hanover back-to-back titles after winning the first in school history last year.

The Hanover boys finished runner-up, falling to South Gray 65-54.

A hot shooting performance put South Gray up by eight after the first quarter and they never looked back. They finish the year a perfect 26-0.

Hanover had a tough battle just to get to the game, beating Centralia 74-73 in overtime in a semifinal that has drawn national attention for a hard foul by a Centralia player on a dunk by Hanover’s Thomas Atkins.

Hanover finishes the year with a 22-2 record.
