NEBRASKA CITY, Neb. – The Lourdes Central Catholic boys basketball team were defeated by two top-ten teams in their season-opening home tournament last weekend and have began the season 0-2, but there is no panic from head coach Joe Tynon as the Knights prepare to host HTRS (3-0) on Friday night.
The two-time defending Class D1 champions lost to Class D2 #7 Parkview Christian, 49-48, in their season opener last Thursday. The fell to Class C2 #2 Yutan in the consolation game on Saturday, 49-41.
According to Tynon, each player is playing a different role this season after the departure of Hayden Miller and Brock Hogeland, who both graduated in May. He says they will be better if they can get a combination of five to six guys playing together.
“It’s just a matter of trusting themselves and the whole team trusting each other. We’ll get there. It’s going to be a process for us, offensively, before we are finally clicking at a full speed.”
This year’s team, who weren’t asked to score a lot a year ago because Miller and Hogeland combined to average 23 points per game, are being asked to step-up and score at least five to six points per game.
Tynon says the biggest struggle last weekend was not executing to get good shots. They have been enforcing high percentage shot attempts this week at practice.
Nebraska City Lourdes will tip-off with HTRS at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. The game will be carried by B103 (103.1 FM and B103.fm).
