Old Sub-District Rivals Collide in Season Opener in Syracuse

SYRACUSE, Neb. – The Falls City High School boys basketball team didn’t take their first lead until late in the third quarter and the Tigers were able to hold-off the Rockets, 47-46, Friday night at Syracuse High School.

Falls City senior Brandt Chapple led all-scorers and finished with a double-double, 16 points and 11 rebounds. Fellow senior Rudy Vrtiska chipped in 13 points and 5 rebounds.

Syracuse junior Ben Nannen had a chance to win the game for the Rockets, but his lay-up attempt rolled off the front of the rim. He finished with 18 points and 3 rebounds.

The Tigers (1-0) will travel to Marysville, KS on Tuesday, while the Rockets (0-1) are right back in action on Saturday when they travel to Fort Calhoun.

Meanwhile, in the girls game, Syracuse had two players in double figures and the Rockets defeated Falls City, 50-35.

Junior Sarah Moss finished with 14 points and 3 rebounds off the bench. Another bench player, sophomore Grace Damme added 10 points.

The Tigers also had two players in double figures. Sophomore Hannah Clary led the team with 12 points and 3 rebounds. Senior Meredith Poppe dropped 10 points and grabbed five boards.

Syracuse (1-0) will be on the road on Saturday at Fort Calhoun. Falls City plays their second-straight road game on Tuesday at Marysville, KS.
