AUBURN – When the Auburn softball team finished their Class C1 district title run with an 11-1 win over Syracuse on Friday, the Bulldogs were excited to learn they’d get another shot at the defending state champions.
No. 5 Auburn will play No. 4 Bishop Neumann in the first round of the Nebraska School Activities Association Class C State Championships on Wednesday at the Bill Smith Softball Complex in Hastings. It’s the Bulldogs third consecutive trip to the state tournament.
The Cavaliers have beaten Auburn two-straight times, including a 13-7 win in the first round of last year’s tournament and a 1-0 victory during the Auburn Invite earlier this season. The last time the Bulldogs defeated Bishop Neumann was during the 2016 Auburn Invite, 6-2.
Auburn Head Coach Grant Cole, in his fourth season with the team, says they’re relishing at the opportunity to play the Cavs again.
“We had Neumann down last year in the first round at state and we just let it slip away late in the later innings. This year, it’s a 1-0 game. Could’ve went either way until the final out. We’re familiar with them. They’re familiar with us. It comes down to who’s going to execute on Wednesday.”
The Bulldogs have hit 17 home runs this season and stolen 17 bases. Sophomore Kylie Allen is hitting .467 with 11 home runs, 8 doubles and 45 RBI’s. Allen has also struck out 122 batters in the circle and carries 2.12 ERA into the final tournament of the season.
Junior Macy Rieschick has scored 33 runs and is expected to contribute on the rubber at state. She is 7-0 with a 2.05 ERA, 24 strikeouts and 28 hits.
First pitch on Wednesday is at 7 p.m. and the game will be carried on Today’s Best Country, B103 (103.1 FM, b103.fm and ncnsportsnow.com).
