“Three Peat so Sweet”: Lourdes Central Catholic sits atop D1 again

LINCOLN – “It was ugly.”

Quentin Vasa’s words, not ours. But the Lourdes Central Catholic senior will take it, as he helped lead the Knights to a 32-25 win over previously-unbeaten Kenesaw in the Class D1 state championship game.

Kenesaw never led, and struggled to shoot over LCC’s length. The Blue Devils shot just 1-of-20 from the three-point line, and just 20.5% overall, including 1-of-14 from the field in the final quarter.

Lourdes’ offensive game wasn’t much better. The Knights shot 29.3% from the field and were 3-of-18 from three. But their defense was the difference, forcing 20 Kenesaw turnovers. Three different players had three steals for the Knights.

The 57 total points scored tied 2017’s Class D2 state championship game between Mead and Mullen as the lowest-scoring Nebraska state championship games since 1948.

LCC is the first school ever to three-peat in Class D2. Spencer-Naper (’02-’03), Johnson-Brock (’97-’98) and Falls City Sacred Heart (’88-’89) were the other three schools to go back-to-back.

The loss ended Kenesaw’s bid at an unbeaten season. They were making their first appearance in a state title game in 98 years.
