HASTINGS – A Hastings baseball standout has been recognized by his peers.
Grant Schmidt had been given the 2017 Shorty Meyer Award for his contribution to the success of the Hastings Five Points Bank senior legion team that finished 2nd in the Class A National Division State Tournament this summer.
The award is given to the most valuable player and is voted on by the team.
Schmidt led Hastings with 45 RBI and 5 home runs and will play ball for Cloud County Community College this spring.
Shorty was a long-time supporter of Hastings Legion Baseball, and despite being handicapped early in life, was always ready to pitch in and help whatever needed to be done, whether that was repairing equipment, working on the grounds or his long-time job of ticket-taker. Shorty displayed a relentless spirit and a willingness to do whatever needed to be done for the good of Hastings baseball.
