Home Federal goes 2-3 at Omaha Classic

OMAHA – The Grand Island seniors finished 2-3 at the Omaha Classic over the weekend with victories over Mitchell, SD and Millard South.

Following a 14-2 win over Mitchell on Friday Home Federal fell to Bellevue West 5-2 on Saturday. Despite grabbing two runs in the top of the sixth to tie the game Bellevue West plated three in the bottom of the sixth to hold on for the win. Will Nordhues went 2-for-3 at the plate for GI and Trey Randall had the lone RBI. Alec Lee pitched 5 2/3 innings striking out six and walking two on four runs and seven hits.

Home Federal dropped the second game on Saturday 5-1 against Millard West. Casey Burnham went 2-for-4 in the defeat while Tucker Krzycki drove in a run. Matt Lamb went four innings and allowed four runs on three hits while striking out three and walking one.

Grand Island bounced back in their first game on Sunday with an 11-6 win over Millard South. Burham (2-for-3, 2 R, RBI, BB), Shay Schanaman (2-for-4, R, RBI), and Will Nordhues (2-for-4, RBI) all recorded multiple hits. Krzycki led the team by knocking in two runs. Gage Rose pitched five innings allowing five runs on five hits and striking out two while walking five.

Home Federal lost the final game of the competition on Sunday 3-2 to Omaha Westside. Grand Island scored twice in the fifth to take a 2-1 lead, but Westside scored one run in both the sixth and seven innings to rally for the victory.

Grand Island travels to South Sioux City for a doubleheader on Tuesday.
