SCOTTSBLUFF – Kearney Runza and Hastings Five Points Bank find themselves in a familiar position.
With Kearney topping North Platte 16-3 on Monday, Hastings and Kearney will battle for the area tournament title for the fourth consecutive year.
After falling to North Platte to open the competition on Friday, Kearney staved off elimination by rattling off three straight wins over Lexington (13-6), Scottsbluff (10-1), and North Platte (16-3) to make it to the final. Hastings enters the championship with just two games under their belt, those being wins over Scottsbluff (5-1) and North Platte (12-10).
Both teams will be heading to state, with the winner going to the American Division Tournament at Millard South while the runner up will head to Lincoln for the National Division Tournament at Sherman Field.
The two teams have met twice this summer with Five Points Bank coming out on top both times; 8-0 on June 7th, and 10-0 on June 28th. However, Kearney has topped Hastings in the area final each of the last three years, although they will have to defeat Five Points twice to win the title.
First pitch for the final is scheduled for 11 AM Mountain Time on Tuesday, a second game will follow if necessary.
