COLUMBUS – Things didn’t quite go as planned for the Columbus varsity girls basketball team last season, as a slow start lead to a 6-17 overall record on the year.
The Discoverers lost their first three games, and five of their first six, and were never quite able to recover throughout the rest of the season. It wasn’t all doom and gloom though, as Columbus defeated Northwest 51-33 in the first round of the Subdistrict B-6 Tournament, before being eliminated by Seward 60-31 n the following round.
Much like the boys team, it will be a season of change for Head Coach Dave Licari’s squad, as four of the top five scorers from last year have graduated. It will be up to a young core of talent to help turn Columbus around, and compete in Class B District 5 this season.
The Discoverers will begin this season’s maiden voyage at home on Friday night against Beatrice, a team which earned a 64-39 victory over Columbus to begin last season. It will be an early test for this young group, and one that may give a very good indication on how this season will end up playing out.
Columbus and Beatrice tip-off at Columbus High School at 5:45 Friday night. Click the link below for a video preview!
