Cheslor Cuthbert singled in two runs in the first inning and later scored a third on an errant throw as Omaha earned a PCL doubleheader split with New Orleans on Saturday with a 4-3 victory at Werner Park.
The Baby Cakes (4-5) topped the Storm Chasers (5-4) 8-2 in the first of the two seven-inning games.
Cuthbert drove a bases-loaded, first-pitch single into right-center field to stake Omaha to an early lead against starter Nick Neidert (1-1). The New Orleans pitcher then threw the ball away as he attempted to get a running Cuthbert at third base in the fourth inning. Cuthbert scored on the error.
Nicky Lopez tacked on an RBI single an inning later to make a winner out of Omaha starter Ben Lively (1-1), who allowed a run on two hits in five innings. Tim Hill recorded a one-out save, his first of the year, after Michael Ynoa surrendered a two-run pinch-hit homer to Isaac Galloway in the seventh.
Galloway also had an RBI double as New Orleans used a five-run seventh to pull away from the Chasers in the opener. Yadiel Rivera drove in two runs with a triple to the wall in center field during the outburst.
Gabriel Guerrero, who doubled twice, and Galloway each had three hits as the Baby Cakes handed former Royals first-round draft pick Foster Griffin (0-1) a loss in his second Triple-A start. Griffin allowed two runs in five innings of work. Hector Noesi (1-0) tossed five scoreless innings to earn the win.
Kansas City prospect Kelvin Gutierrez homered for Omaha in the opener. He’s batting .433 this season.
