GRAND ISLAND – Crete and Grand Island Northwest split a basketball doubleheader Tuesday night with Crete winning the boys game 55-38 while Northwest took the girls matchup 50-31.
The Crete boys got out to a fast start offensively while stifling Northwest with their 1-3-1 zone defense to open up a 16-8 lead after one quarter. They then opened the second period on a 12-0 run to put the game out of reach.
The Cardinal lead hung around 20 for much of the second half before Northwest cut it to within 13 late, but that was as close as the Vikings got.
Carter Kent led the way for Crete with 20 points while Graham Newton and Klay Uher scored 10 each. Newton also added 11 rebounds. Northwest was paced by 13 points from Jeremiah Ivers.
The girls game was close early, but the perimeter shooting of Northwest proved to be too much for a young Crete team as the Vikings knocked down seven three pointers en route to an easy win.
Whitney Brown knocked down three of those to lead all scorers with 18 points with Emily Stein chipping in 10. Morgan Maly was Crete’s only player in double figures with 15 points and seven rebounds.
Next up for Northwest will be a matchup with Seward on Saturday. Crete returns home to face Beatrice on Thursday. That game will be broadcast on NCN21 and KWBE.
