Glenwood’s Ryan Leath wins third Hawkeye Ten championship; Creston wins girls title

COUNCIL BLUFFS — Ryan Leath’s brilliance during regulation play on Monday allowed him to avoid working overtime again.

As a freshman and junior, the Glenwood senior needed playoffs to emerge as the Hawkeye Ten Conference individual champion. On Monday at Fox Run Golf Course, Leath carded an even-par 71 to claim his third league title by three strokes over Atlantic sophomore Braden Smith on a cool, pleasant day of action.

Atlantic repeated as the team champion by the slimmest of margins, edging Glenwood 314-315 for top honors.

Leath did his part for the Rams, and he entered the meet well-prepared.

“We just live 15 minutes down the road, so we come up here quite a bit,’’ he said.

Leath started and finished with a flourish, getting birdies on his first and last holes. He shot 2-under 34 on the front nine and 2-over 37 on the back nine.

“I was getting off the tee pretty well, and then I was making a lot of putts,’’ the DMACC golf recruit said. “I had a lot of saves, and my approach shots were pretty good today, too.’’

Leath and the Rams did not qualify for state last season. They fell short at Majestic Hills in Denison. That’s where the Class 3-A sectional is again on Friday, but Leath said his team is ready.

“Can’t wait for it,’’ he said.

Atlantic’s scorers were runner-up Smith (74), senior Matt Gearheart (third, 76), junior Cyle Renaud (fourth, 77) and sophomore Drey Newell (31st, 87). Coach Ed DenBeste said Smith, who had been shooting around 80 until recently, was the most pleasant surprise.

“It’s his score that brought us there,’’ he said. “He’s been playing really well. He’s hitting it a little straighter. He hit some greens and definitely got up and down when he needed to.’’

Glenwood’s other scorers were seniors Dax Lappala (eighth, 79), Nick Stavas (18th, 82) and Eli Bales (19th, 83).
