WAKEFIELD, NE — Carter Kingsbury scored 25 points and the #8 Ponca Indians beat the #4 Wakefield Trojans 56-43 on Tuesday night.
The matchup featured the two-time defending champions Indians (9-2) against the undefeated Trojans (9-1). The game stayed close until the final minutes when Ponca pulled away.
Kingsbury carried the Indians in the first half by pouring in 15 points. He helped ignite at 10-0 run in the first quarter which saw Ponca gain its first lead of the game.
Solomon Peitz lifted the Trojans’ stagnant offense in the first half and beat the first quarter buzzer with a circus-shot jumper. He finished with a team-high 20 points. Ponca led 29-23 at halftime.
Wakefield’s Justin Erb heated up in the second half and helped the Trojans to cut their deficit to just three points. But Evan Anderson and Gage McGill made key plays down the stretch to build the lead back up. Kingsbury scored his final six points at the free throw line to ice the game.
