CENTRAL CITY, NE — They never really put the game away but the Riverside girls basketball team played tough defense down the stretch to earn a road win over Nebraska Christian 49-47 on Friday night.
The teams played an even first half but Riverside’s (10-11) McKenna Anderson hit a three-pointer with under 10 seconds left to pull the Chargers to within one point.
Then, in the third quarter, Riverside ramped up their defense and created transition opportunities to take the lead. But, the Chargers struggled to ice the game away at the free throw line. They went just 4-15 from the charity stripe but didn’t let Nebraska Christian (9-11) score in their final two possessions to hold on for the win.
Riverside was led in scoring by Anderson’s 14 points while Laura Rankin also finished in double figures with 10 points. Maddie Walkowiak played a balanced game, scoring nine points while collecting 12 rebounds and five steals.
Adrienne Falk paced the Eagles with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Claire Ostrand finished with 13 points in the losing effort.
