BETHESDA, Md. — Creighton got a sweep and a new spot in the Big East standings.
The Bluejays completed their sweep of Georgetown, winning 14-2 and 7-4 on Saturday. Coupled with Xavier’s loss to Seton Hall, Creighton moved into first place in the league standings with two weekends of games left. Creighton is 9-3, while Xavier is 9-4.
Saturday’s opener was the completion of Friday’s suspended game. In the nightcap, the Bluejays never trailed after scoring five runs in the third inning.
Creighton was leading 9-0 in the sixth inning when that game was suspended Friday night by thunderstorms. Jordan Hovey drove in five runs and Will Robertson added four RBIs.
Hovey went 2 for 3 as he had a two-run double in the first inning, a sacrifice fly in the fourth and a two-run single in the ninth. Robertson hit a three-run homer in the fourth.
Jake Holton added four hits and scored three times, while Parker Upton scored four runs.
Denson Hull earned the win as he pitched five shutout innings.
In the finale, the Bluejays scored five runs on five hits in the third, which included an RBI double by Robertson and Holton’s RBI triple.
Georgetown cut Creighton’s lead to 5-3 in the fourth, but the Bluejays responded with two runs in the fifth to regain control. Upton and Jack Strunc each had RBI doubles in the fifth.
Evan Johnson pitched the first five innings to earn the win, improving to 6-2 on the season. Bobby Kametas pitched a scoreless ninth for his sixth save.
Since losing to Xavier last Sunday, Creighton has won four straight and will play its final seven games at home.
CU’s next game will be Friday at 6:30 p.m. against St. John’s.
