NORFOLK – If Saturday’s Northeast Nebraska All-Star Volleyball Game was a best of nine sets match, it probably would have gone the full nine.
In a match where neither team could sustain a run, the Light Team, coached by Ponca’s Jessica Templeman and Lutheran High Northeast’s Kathy Gebhardt, won in five sets (23-25, 26-24, 23-25, 25-21, 15-13).
After falling behind two sets to one, the Light Team began to get their offense on track first with their defense. Tekamah-Herman’s Elizabeth Dlouhy came up with two key blocks in the third set, and Monica Arens (Crofton) and Kalli Brester (Howells-Dodge) began to get into a rhythm offensively. Arens led the Light team in kills with 12, while Brester added eight kills and was named most valuable player.
The Dark Team MVP was Elizabeth Selting of Elgin Public/Pope John, who finished with 12 kills.
The match was the final one for Dark Head Coach McKenzie Connot of St. Mary’s, who is stepping away from coaching.
This will be far from the final volleyball match for many of the players involved. Ten of the athletes featured on Saturday will be playing volleyball in college.
