Neligh Juniors Score Six Straight to Avoid Area Tournament Upset

NELIGH – Kaleb Pofahl drove in three runs, including the game-winner, as 3-seed Neligh came from five runs down to beat 6-seed Pierce, 8-7, in the opening round of the Class C Junior Area 1 tournament.

Pofahl’s grounder with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh was enough to score Austin Rice from third, and complete a comeback from five runs down.

Pierce had taken a 7-2 lead thanks to three runs in the 6th, including a 2-RBI single by Kaleb Anderson.

But Neligh answered right back with five runs in the bottom of the 6th. Cole Belitz pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the 7th to set up Neligh and earn the win in relief.

Neligh will next face 7-seed Battle Creek, who upset Creighton in their opening-round match-up. Creighton awaits Pierce in Saturday’s consolation bracket game.

Before the game, both teams participated in a moment of silence for Jason Gutz, a member of Plainview’s senior legion team who was killed in a farm implement accident near Brunswick earlier this week.
