Syracuse’s confidence riding high after holiday tournament championship

SYRACUSE, Neb. – The schedule for the Syracuse boys basketball team has not been forgiving this holiday season.

The Rockets lost to Class C1 #7 Lincoln Christian, 74-58, on Dec. 19, but rebounded with wins over Class D1 #8 Nebraska City Lourdes, 57-51, and Freeman, 45-37, to claim the Freeman Holiday Tournament championship.

Up next: Class C1 #1 Wahoo (8-0) at 7:45 p.m. Friday at Syracuse High School.

Head Coach Mark Hrabik says playing three ranked opponents in their last five games has given the Rockets confidence they can play against quality teams and not only compete with them, but also put themselves in position to win games.

“The message is just keep trying to improve. Obviously, we know we’re playing several quality teams back-to-back. There’s not a lot of moral victory in just playing well, you want to play well and feel like you have a chance to win games.”

Hrabik has been telling his team they played well against two quality teams last week, so “let’s just go out and see what we can do against these guys (Wahoo).”

It’ll be the first game of the new year for both the Rockets and Warriors. Catch the game live on B103 (103.1 FM, b103.fm).
