Winside Wins Hartington Tournament – Off to Best Start in a Decade

HARTINGTON – Winside weathered a second-half rally by host Hartington-Newcastle, and Shaye Morten’s potentially game-tying three missed just before the buzzer, allowing Winside to top Hartington 46-43 to win the post-holiday tournament.

Winside opened up a double-digit lead in the first half – helped by senior guard JaShaun Viborny going on a 10-0 run by himself – and went to the break with an eight-point lead.

But Hartington-Newcastle rallied in the second half, led by senior Cole Schmidt. Schmidt had eight points in the third quarter alone and 21 for the game, as Hartington regained the lead in the 3rd quarter.

But Winside was able to close it out late, with their defense keeping Hartington-Newcastle from scoring the game-tying three late and preventing Winside from playing their fourth overtime game in the span of a week.

Winside is now 7-4, their best start since an 8-3 start to the 2006-07 season.
