Bobcat Cross Country Fifth in Bronco Stampede

PERU – While it was a warm morning, it must have been a good recipe for better times as all members of the Peru State cross country team bettered their times from early in the season.

The Bobcats participated in the Bronco Stampede hosted by Hastings College Saturday morning. As a team, the ‘Cats finished fifth.

The hosts won the meet with a total of 31 points having the first three top runners. Placing second was Concordia with 36 points while Doane finished with 78. In fourth was York with 106 while Peru State was fifth with a 157 total. Finishing sixth was Bellevue with a score of 161. Also competing was a partial team from Southeast Community College – Beatrice.

As she was in the first meet of the year, Julia Zurek (Louisville) was the team’s top runner as she finished 33rd overall out of 88 runners and 23rd for scoring purposes. Zurek ran a time of 23:14.34 which was over a minute faster than she ran in the first meet of the year.

Finishing as the team’s second-best runner was Jacey Sutton (Wahoo) who finished 55th/31st in a time of 25:08.95. Sutton’s time was over 90 seconds faster than what she had run in the Bearcat Invite.

Alyssa Brink (Oakland, Iowa) ran nearly two minutes faster than in her first collegiate meet and finished 61st/33rd in a time of 26:20.32. Aubrey Wattier (Malcolm) ran 33 seconds faster than in her first meet and was the Bobcats’ fourth-best runner finishing right behind brink in a time of 26:32.58.

Sydney Stevelinck (Lyons, Colo.) was the next Peru State finisher in 65th/36th place in a time of 27:06.28 while Brealynn Wattier (Malcolm) was next in a time of 27:13.87. Stevelinck cut almost exactly three minutes off her best time while cut 23 seconds off her first time of the year.

Marissa Wingert (Panama, Iowa) and Hailee Lynn (Malcolm) were the next two finishers in 68th and 69th respectively in times of 27:47.29 and 27:54.84. Wingert pared 66 seconds off her first run of the year while Lynn cut 82 seconds off her time.

Hailey Bouwens (Lincoln) was 71st in a time of 29.57.17 and Caitlyn Longfellow (Auburn) was 74th in 30:40.52. Bouwens ran nearly two and one-half minutes faster while Longfellow was four and one-half minutes faster than what she ran in Maryville.

Also running for the Bobcats were Destiny Worthey (Humboldt) – 75th in 30:48.93, Samantha Daake (Beatrice) – 76th in 31:14.28, and Makalah Scheele (Beatrice) – 77th in 31:42.04. Worthey cut nearly three and one-half minutes off her previous time while Daake cut four minutes of her time in the first meet of the year. Scheele ran 11 seconds better.

The Bobcats will be competing again next Saturday as they will participate in the Dean White Invite hosted by Doane College in Crete, Neb. Race time will be 10 a.m.
