Raiders Downs 3 Ranked Opponents Over Weekend

COLUMBUS  – The #2 Central Community College Raiders cruised passed three ranked opponents over the weekend, only dropping one game to #1 Parkland to advance to 15-1.

The #2 Raiders dropped their opening match on the weekend to #1 Parkland 3-0, but turned around to topple #9  McHenry County College in 3 sets.

Raiders Head Coach Mary Young says, “Overall this weekend was a great tournament for us. We faced great competition and any time you see strong opponents, your team gets better. we were disappointed with our result against #1 Parkland, I think we learned a lot about ourselves and it will serve us well as the season progresses,”

We really didn’t have an answer for Parkland’s setter; she distributed the ball extremely well and her fast release made it difficult for our blockers to read and slow their attack down at the net.  They definitely have a powerful attack and play a great side out game, but I felt if we could have slowed them down and gotten a good first ball dig, we could have competed with them in transition.

On Saturday the #2 Raiders took on #14 Illinois Central College, only dropping one set in the victory. Jacie Laetsch led the team offensively with 11 kills, while a tough defensive performance by Jess Eurek yielded 26 digs. CCC won in four sets, 25-17, 25-16, 21-25, 25-20.

Scotus alum Meghan Pieper led Central in match number 2, as they took on #6 Sauk Community College. The Raiders once again claimed victory after four sets, that inks to 15 kills by Pieper, and 13 kills by both Laetsch and Chainey Tompkin.

I was happy with our ability to bounce back after the Parkland match and win against 3 ranked teams. I can’t say enough about the back court play and hustle of our libero Jessica Eurek; she passed well and played tremendous defense and really kept a lot of balls in play for us.
